"Sound poetry": "literary" but not "literature"; "musical" but not "music"; it's both & between & neither & exists in a relative vacuum of rarefied "extended vocal technique" that's all but inaccessible to the investigative listener with a desire for something "more".
In the late 19oos, polyvocal sound poetry enjoyed a duodecadenal initiative in Canada unparallelled elsewhenorwhere in the world. Primarily through the efforts of 2 quartets – Four Horsemen (Rafael Barreto-Rivera, Paul Dutton, Steve McCaffery, bpNichol) & Owen Sound (Michael Dean, David Penhale, Steven Ross Smith, Richard Truhlar) – the genre as a whole was refined, redefined, & redesigned notationally to accommodate a wide variety of performance options thentofore unavailable.
Messagio Galore is an ongoing sound poetry research project dedicated to exploring notable historic repertoire in a demanding combination of through-scored & improvisational readings by the Ottawa quintet Quatuor Gualuor (Conyer Clayton, jwcurry, nina jane drystek, Chris Johnson, Alastair Larwill). 2 years in the making, Take XVc, in particular, is a "comparalive" study of 23 selected works from the members of Four Horsemen & Owen Sound, with an intermezzal quintet of relevant extranea (by Robert Ashley, jwcurry, Alastair Larwill & Greta Monach).
A unique sonic experience not to be missed!
