During his career running McClelland & Stewart, Douglas Gibson became a publishing icon. When he retired, this "editor to the stars" became an author. His 2011 book
Stories About Storytellers:
Publishing Alice Munro, Robertson Davies, Alistair MacLeod, Pierre Trudeau and Others
led to a one-man stage show that he took across Canada, and to London and Beijing.
After more than 100 such shows, he wrote a second book,
Across Canada by Story: A Coast-to-Coast Literary Adventure
. Drawing on the brilliant caricatures by Anthony Jenkins, he spoke about the authors he got to know well behind the scenes. He has already given 65 of these shows.
Now, as his Sesquicentennial celebration of our Fiction Writers, English and French, comes this ambitious show, once again with the superb portraits by Anthony Jenkins: CANADA'S GREATEST STORYTELLERS/ LES GRANDS RACONTEURS CANADIENS 1867 -2017
Starting with the great Haida storyteller, Skaay, he takes us decade by decade down through the years, selecting our greatest fiction writers. Bursts of Canadian songs, and scores of famous Canadian photos, along with many iconic Canadian paintings by our finest artists establish the context in which our writers worked.
The result is an ambitious, unforgettable celebration of our finest storytellers.
Books available for purchase at every event: Proceeds support our free children’s literacy programs.
