Join Lucy van Oldenbarneveld for a conversation with three remarkable writers whose new novels–a mythological epic, a Bildungsroman in the lockdown era, and a researched historical romance–all explore our shared need for connection and the many ways we all have to fight for love.

International bestseller Kate Heartfield returns with Valkirie , a glorious, lyrical retelling of one of Norse mythology’s greatest epics. Brynhild is a Valkyrie: shieldmaiden of the Allfather, chooser of the slain. But now she too has fallen, flightless in her exile. Gudrun is a princess of Burgundy, a daughter of the Rhine, a prize for an invading king. Both may may yet find that love is the greatest weapon of all.

Eva Crocker is back on our stage with Back in the Land of the Living . It brings us a year in the life of Marcy, a young queer woman who moves to Montreal in the fall of 2019 after making a mess of her life in St. John’s. Alone in a big city on the brink of lockdown, she tries to carve out a future amidst the intertwined crises of late capitalism, the climate apocalypse, and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emma Donoghue, the bestselling author of Room and The Wonder, returns with Learned by Heart, based on the true story of two girls who fall secretly, deeply and dangerously in love at boarding school in nineteenth century York. Full of passion and heartbreak, the tangled lives of Anne Lister and Eliza Raine form a love story for the ages.
