We take a deep dive into Canada’s past with two remarkable novels–both long listed for the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize–that chronicle Black lives between the world wars.

The Sleeping Car Porter ,   by ReLit Award Winner Suzette Mayr, brings to life an important part of Black history in North America. Told from the perspective of a queer man living in a culture that renders him invisible in two ways, it’s 1929. When a mudslide strands a train, Baxter must contend with the perils of white passengers, ghosts, and his secret love affair.

Told through the fascinating lens of a bright woman in an oft-disquieting world,  by Chelene Knight, is intimate and urgent—not just an unflinching look Hogan's Alley in the 1930s—a thriving Black and immigrant community located in Vancouver's East End, but a celebration of the Black lives within.
