We welcome two international publishing sensations for a conversation with CBC’s Adrian Harewood on how history informs our place in the world and a taste of their acclaimed new novels.

A captivating blend of magical realism, scathing political satire, tender comedy, and literary experimentation, Transparent City by José Saramago Prize winner Ondjaki, offers a gripping and joyful portrait of urban Africa quite unlike any before yet published in English. In a crumbling apartment block in the Angolan city of Luanda, families work, laugh, scheme, and get by. In the middle of it all is the melancholic Odonato, nostalgic for the country of his youth and searching for his lost son. As his hope drains away and the city outside his doors changes beyond all recognition, Odonato’s flesh becomes transparent and his body increasingly weightless.

Esi Edugyan, winner of the Scotiabank Giller Prize for Half Blood Blues, makes her first appearance at the Festival with her latest Booker long-listed novel. From the blistering cane fields of Barbados to the icy plains of the Canadian Arctic, from the mud-drowned streets of London to the eerie deserts of Morocco, Washington Black teems with all the strangeness of life. This inventive, electrifying novel asks, “What is freedom?” and “Can a life salvaged from the ashes ever be made whole?”
