Canadian Beavers is Tessa Hulls’ love letter to Canada and to the Ottawa International Writers Festival. The piece is the culmination of a partnership between the Pulitzer Prize winning artist and the Festival meant to foster a global community of artists even in the face of political adversity. Tessa has represented many of the 2026 authors, as well as past Festival authors, as Beavers. The Beaver motif continues to wink at literary genres.
Inspired by Where’s Waldo, Canadian Beavers celebrates our festival and our National literature.
Tessa Hulls is an American journalist, painter, illustrator, editor, and educator. Early in her career, she drew short journalistic reports in comic format. In 2023, she released her first graphic novel, 'Feeding Ghosts: A Graphic Memoir', which made her the second comic book artist to receive a Pulitzer Prize (2025). 'Feeding Ghosts' chronicles the lives of Hulls' grandmother and mother, who were both born and raised in China, before moving to the United States. Tessa was a guest of the Ottawa International Writers Festival in 2024.
