Jimmy Murphy left school at the age of 15 and worked as a house painter for 15 years. It was not until 1986 that he began to write plays. His first big break came when Brothers of the Brush was accepted by the Abbey Theatre in 1993 as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival, where it went on to win the Best New Irish Play Award. It has been produced throughout Europe and the United States. The Abby is currently making arrangements to produce his third play, The Last Resort. Jimmy's work has also appeared on BBC's Radio 4. He is currently hard at work on a new play, Paddy Englishman.
