Mark Abley is the author and/or editor of ten books. His 2003 book, Spoken Here: Travels Among Threatened Languages, was shortlisted for both the Pearson Writers' Trust Non-Fiction Prize and the Grand Prix du Livre de Montreal. It has gone into its fourth hardcover printing in the U.K., and is being translated into French, Spanish, Catalan, and Japanese. He is a winner of the National Newspaper Award for critical writing. A former contributing editor of both Saturday Night and Maclean's, he spent 16 years at the Montreal Gazette working as a feature writer, literary columnist, and book-review editor. He was born in England, grew up in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and now writes full-time in Montreal.
